Have you ever heard anybody say something like: “I know you think, you heard what you thought I said, but I’m not sure that you realize that what you heard me say, was not what I meant…….” or something like that. Communication is something that we learn from infancy and yet communication has probably been responsible for more war than any other reason in history.

People starting off in network marketing often go into it thinking that their MLM success strategy is to convince a prospect into joining their business. This is often viewed as an aggressive act by the prospect since they are often put under great emotional pressure to agree to the “amazing offer” they are given. The new marketer believes that he has got to win the prospect over, by extolling in depth the many virtues their product or service or business have to offer.

A network marketer will have the most success when he spends 80% of his time listening to his prospect and identifying how he may be of help to the prospect. For many people communication is simply waiting while someone is talking until they have a chance to speak themselves. They are more preoccupied in the message that they plan to share than any valuable information they might receive have they chose to just listen.

These people turn communication into a duel e.g. the one who speaks first wins; The person who speaks the longest wins; The one who has the greatest vocabulary wins. The truth is that the person that treats communication like some sort of competition is the one that loses. If you want to be an effective in marketing your products or services or thought of as a true leader then you need to spend less time talking and more time listening.

Observe any leader in MLM and you’re likely to find that the leader does not attempt to dominate a conversation. They are comfortable with themselves and feel no need to listen to their own voice occupying the airwaves. A good MLM success strategy is to spend 80% of your time listening and 20% of your time speaking.

Okay, now that you’re listening are you attending? So what do I mean by attending – are you really listening and digesting what the person is saying or are you just simply smiling and nodding your head and waiting to talk. I would encourage you to seek out a couple of people having a conversation and ask yourself as you listen to them speak, are they really having a conversation or are they just waiting for their turn to say something.

I used to think that the one that speaking is the one that is in control of the conversation but that’s just not true. When you’re presenting your opportunity or your products or services you will have more success controlling your sales presentation when you devote the majority of your time to asking questions. Remember that your presentation is not about you it is about them.  Some time ago a study was conducted on a commuter flight from one major city to another. The flight lasted approximately 45 minutes and the study involved a gentleman sitting beside a passenger and asking her questions from the time they sat down until the time they landed at the other airport. After disembarking from the aircraft the lady was asked what she thought of the gentleman that had sat beside her.

She was very eager to share how impressed she was with his fellow and yet when they asked her questions about this man, she knew nothing about him. She liked him because he took the time to listen to her he made the conversation all about her. He asked her questions about her family, he asked questions about where she lived and her favourite interests – in short, he made her feel important.

In summary your MLM success strategy should be to devote more time to listening and less time to speaking. When you ask questions, listen to the answers and then ask more questions probing deeper as you go. People can tell very quickly when you don’t care about the answers they give, and as a result very quickly you will find that they’re not speaking to you at all. Make your prospect feel important, and let your presentation be about helping them solve their problems.
