When I began my career to build my MLM business, I was extremely unsure of myself and so I took advantage of all the free MLM Training I could get. Still it seemed that in the beginning most of my training was not from CDs or Coaches – it came from learning things by trial and error. This is not the approach I would recommend anyone take. I heard it said that you can’t look good and get better at the same time however this is a lot to be said for having an experienced coach guiding you along because it can save you a ton of time and get you into a profit quickly.

I saw people get into marketing and start making thousands of dollars in their first month simply because they had quality coaching by top leaders who knew how to make the most of the comp plan and how to build a team. When I started approaching people I had some success but I had to make up in numbers of people to talk to due to the recruiting skills that I lacked.

I would start presenting my business and I would immediately get thrown the classic “ this isn’t network marketing is it?” question and my resolve would deflate immediately as I would meekly answer yes. I would approach someone about my business confident that the person would join once they heard about it. It would not take more than a minute and my invitation to look at my business would turn into a 50 question barrage. I did some looking around in the business I had signed up for and found a couple that took me under their wing and taught me their mlm recruiting system.

They called it L.I.P.S.S. which is an acronym for List, Invite, Present, Sort and Sign. They told me the first thing to do was to get a hard covered note book and start writing names and their phone numbers in it. They told me that I would constantly be adding names to it as I went about my life because they said we are constantly meeting new people. They told me the next part was simple to do but most people did it all wrong and as a result often would fail in their business to recruit anyone and then they would quit within a month or two. I almost took that as direct challenge because I had no intention to quit. They told me most new people start off by inviting their prospect to look over the business and just like what had been happening to me they end up answering a barrage of questions and then the prospect says “Thanks, but no thanks”. They told me that Invite and Present are two separate steps and that I should leave the presentation to them as they could explain the business effectively and help me increase my sign up rate by modeling how to do a presentation. They said the last two steps were very straight forward as all I need to do was sort out the ones that were interested from those that were not. The ones that liked what they saw I would sign up into my business and the ones that were not I was to let them go.

They told me to keep their names and to check back on them every 6 months or so as people’s situations can change. They told me that my job was not to convince or do high pressure selling. They said just expose your business and look for those that are looking. The more I held my ground on presenting my business and using the LIPSS approach the more success I had. That was 15 years ago and I still use this and it has gotten easy now and I can’t imagine doing my face to face marketing any other way.
