I recall one of the very first things I was asked to do when I got into MLM was to write down my goals. This was described to me as being one of the most important things I needed to do and I was a bit ambivalent about it. After all what I really needed to do was make some money doing marketing. I saw a lot of people that were making a “lot of money” and that was “goal” enough for me.
My coach told me to get a card and write down my dream goal on it and if I could find a picture and add that to it as well. He encouraged me to look at my dream card often. Well I had my dream on a card and I read it multiple times a day. Nothing seemed to be happening and so I went back to my coach and he said it was great that I had my card done and was impressed when I said even had a Dream Board started. He then asked me what my daily goals looked like and my expression gave me away – I didn’t have any.
I had convinced myself that I would do my best and work my business in my spare time. What more could I do, I reasoned. Besides the idea of setting daily goals for my day seemed way to intense. I had a close friend that shared his view on goals and he said that most people aim for nothing in life and hit it with amazing accuracy. My coach pulled me aside and said, Chuck you can work your business part-time or full-time but I could not do it in my spare time. He said by listing all of the things I needed to get done on a sheet of paper and then attaching a number beside each item signifying its’ importance was a great place to start.
He also said I needed balance in my list that included the time I would spend with my wife Pat and our kids, recreation time, spiritual time, time at my job. So I drafted up a schedule of all these things for each day of the week and I proudly went back to my coach and presented my weekly goals and he said that it was great! But then he asked me what specifically was I going to accomplish each week and I said I didn’t know but I would do my best. He smiled at me and said that I need to think of an outcome goal. So after some soul searching and a ton of positive thinking I decided to run with 2 new people sponsored in my business each week.
My coach said that it is great Chuck you are starting to get this goal thing down but there was one more thing I needed to add in my business and that was a Minimum Daily Activity amount. He said I cannot control the number of people that join my business but I can control the amount of activity I am committed to do. He said Chuck I want you to commit to having a specific number of people view your business presentation each day. So I did and what amazed me was that within a very short time of setting my daily and weekly goals on a Macro and Micro level my results started to take off and I earned a trip to Texas for Pat and I at an exclusive Corporate Ranch. This was very cool this goal setting stuff works I thought.
I want to share one more thing that really was a huge help in my MLM business. I have a big old ceramic frog that sitting on my Desk. Brian Tracy wrote a best seller called EAT THAT FROG! If you have not read it go to your local book store and get it. It is all about procrastination. He suggests that you get your ugliest task done first. The Bull Frog is simply a metaphor – imagine if you had to eat an Huge Ugly Bull Frog by the end of the day. This made so much sense I had Pat give me the ceramc frog from our yard. Now that ugly critter proudly sits on my desk to remind me to “Eat That Frog” early in the morning. It works super because eating it first means you don’t have to worry about it eating it later. You got the job done fast, making the rest of my day relaxed and far more productive.
