During the first few years I was involved in my MLM business I did a lot of face to face marketing. Where I lived I was about a hundred miles apart from two major cities and so I was buying Leads in these two communities. I was very nervous when I called people and the idea of qualifying someone made my blood run cold. Most of all I did everything I could possibly do to avoid any kind of rejection. You may have heard of “yes conditioning”; whereby, you as a series of questions to a prospect where the only answer they could give you without sounding silly would be a “yes”. Well I was not skilled at this so what I had mastered was to avoid anything that would make me feel sad or discouraged.

Do you find you get interrupted a lot when you go to present your MLM OPPORTUNITY?

When I first started doing calls I was very nervous and uncertain about how to ask people a bunch of questions that were in my mind, very personal. Questions like: are you married; where do you work; how much money do you need to have to replace your job; do you have any kids, made my blood pressure rocket. I was always taught by my dad to mind my own business. I guess I was a bit slow because it took me a long time before I figured out that I was minding my own business. I needed to know who I was talking to at a much deeper level than just knowing their name and phone number if I was going to have them as my business partner.

What I started off doing was focusing my attention on my company and the products/services we had. I went into great detail with my prospects because I felt if they knew what I had to offer them, they would join my business immediately. What I found typically happened I would begin explain my business and then the prospect would become frustrated feeling like I was wasting their time, they would ask a few quick questions and then hang up or dismiss me.

MLM Frustration – Connecting With Your Prospect

Have you ever had this happen on the phone? You call a prospect about your MLM  business and instead of you sharing the business; the person you dialled takes over the call and interviews you? Each time you answer a question they ask they bury you with a barrage of questions and then they let you go after they have finished interviewing you. Perhaps you are even ready to throw in the towel because you are so frustrated.

If the above sounds familiar then read on because you are not alone. During my first year and a half in my MLM I had no upline that did calls on the phone using Leads. Once a week I would join a conference call and listen in to a leader make his calls. I think I listened in more just to remind myself that calling Leads could be done successfully if you knew how. Despite my religiously attending the calls each week I was unable to see any significant differences in his presentation and my own.

MLM Lead Call Fear

Calling leads was perhaps the scariest thing that I have had to learn how to do. I recall the first time I joined an MLM. The person that signed me up showed me all the numbers and convinced me that I was on my way to success. I called a friend and asked him to go over the numbers with me and he assured me that I was on right path. So I cut the check and signed up with the company. It was exciting and I can recall replacing my normal sheep counting at bed time with counting one hundred dollar bills.

Actually I never have count sheep to get to sleep, that is something I usually have no problem doing but I have to admit I did spend a few sleepless nights envisioning a new car,  a big new house and a robust bank account. It was great, I was on my way. I was not able to dive in immediately as I had other obligations at the time I joined so when I finally looked at my starter kit a week later it told me to write down on a sheet of paper my reason for doing the business. Man, that was so easy to do, after all, I was going to become wealthy – a self made man. The next step caused me to have difficulty swallowing. I was now required to write a list of names of people that I knew.

MLM FRUSTRATION Fact and Fiction

If I Do Sales Then I will:

  1. Have to do public Speaking – Marketing and Sales requires public speaking to varying degrees and most people would rather die than do public speaking.  Standing in front of large audiences is not a requirement to become successful in any MLM.

  1. Become a pushy, self serving person - Most people believe that the act of Sales means manipulating or coerce another to buy something they don’t want, can’t afford and will never use – seasoned with tons of pressure to close the deal. Professional marketers never do selling or convincing – they sort.

  1. Lose my friends and my family if I do an MLM – A commonly held belief is that to do an MLM means that it would be necessary to pressure ones friends and family to join their MLM business and in so doing ultimately lose their family and friends love and respect.  When you act with integrity this is a non-issue.

With these prevailing myths it is no wonder most people’s knee jerk reaction is to say no to joining an MLM.

Sadly, folks involved in sales marketing often get unjustly stereotyped. The truth is that referral marketing is one of the oldest forms of marketing that exists. Sales and marketing is a very needed and noble profession. We would not have food to eat, clothes to wear, or even a car to get to work in if we had no one sell us our products and services. We think nothing of recommending a great restaurant or an excellent holiday “get-a-way” to a friend. If you had the cure for cancer you would gladly share it. Many people in the trades have experienced the “good friend” that expects him or her to repair his electrical, fix his car or sell his house at cost or even less because of the friendship they share. Friends helping friends is the underlying principle that is being played out.

HARD WORK CAN DESTROY YOUR BUSINESS

So Work Smart!

There is a belief that dates back to the dawn of time that he who works hardest is the one who always succeeds. This is a myth and needs to be packaged up and sent to the big deceiver in the ground. One of favourite examples of this is “practice makes perfect”. This is an absurd saying, because practicing the wrong thing a million times will not trigger perfection to take place. Now Mike Litman, a motivational speaker that I absolutely admire always says “You Don’t Have To Get It Right, You Just Have To Get It Going!” At first blush it would seem doing it wrong is ok; however this is not the case Mike is simply saying, don’t wait until everything is perfect get started “DOING IT” and improve as you go.
